Kiesha Jenkins, a 22 year old trans woman of color, was beaten and shot to death by a group of men in North Philadelphia early Tuesday morning becoming the 18th trans woman of color killed in the U.S. this year.
Jenkins was attacked around 2:30 am when according to Philly.com five or six men “surrounded and beat her”. After the beating one of the men pulled a gun and shot her in the back. In a statement to the Philadelphia Gay News Philadelphia Homicide Capt. James Clark said “Obviously, it looks like she was targeted, but we don’t know yet for what reason.” Philadelphia detectives are currently searching for surveillance tape of the incident as well as the person who had been driving Jenkins.
Jenkins friends remember her as an “energetic spirit.”
Jenkins is the second trans person of color killed in Philadelphia this year. In may Londyn Chanel, 21, was found stabbed to death; Allegedly by the boyfriend of one of her housemates. Raheem Felton has been charged in the murder and awaits trial.
Jenkins death is the latest in a tragic trend of trans women of color being killed across the country. Of the 20 trans women killed in the country this year 18 were persons of color. In a report from Mother Jones FBI statistics very much underestimates the extent of the problem. The latest available FBI stats from 2013 show 33 hate crimes against gender identity. This number, however, doesn’t account for what is believed to be a large number of incidents that go unreported due to intimidation and fear . If Jenkins death is any indication trans POC deaths are a sad trend with no end in sight.
