Marlene Pinnock, a 51-year-old grandmother and lawyer, found herself laying on the side of a California highway in Los Angeles absorbing the multiple punches from Highway Patrolman Daniel Andrew. On July 7, 2014, Pinnock was stopped by Officer Andrew after walking against traffic on the 10 Freeway near La Brea Avenue. Pinnock resisted arrest by pulling away from Officer Andrew. What happened next would be caught on cellphone video and go viral across social media:

Pinnock describing the event said “He grabbed me, he threw me down, he started beating me, he beat me. I felt like he was trying to kill me, beat me to death.” Pinnock, after being placed on a two-week psychiatric hold, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Following the incident, Pinnock accepted a $1.5 million settlement that included the resignation of Officer Andrew.
