Justus Howell, age 17, was shot twice in the back by Zion, Illinois police April 4, 2015. According to Zion police someone called reporting an argument or fight in the 2300 block of Gilead Avenue. The caller also reported hearing a gunshot. According to police, as they arrived an armed male fled the scene and Howell would ultimately be shot on 24th Street and Galilee Avenue. Despite witness claims that Howell was unarmed, police report finding a gun at the scene of the shooting. Speaking about the incident LaToya Howell, Justus’s mother, said “Justus was a young man murdered by Zion police. As he was fleeing from police, they killed my son. He couldn’t have been a threat if he was running.” According to LaToya, Justus was working toward going to medical school.
Police investigations are on going as family and friends hold vigils in the teen’s memory.
