Donald Trump continues his attempts to roll back the progress America has made while making the most vulnerable of us more vulnerable.
The president moved forward on rolling back protection guidelines set up by the Obama administration. The New York Times reported that Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos clashed on the topic. But with pressure from Trump, DeVos gave in and as Press Secretary Sean Spicer said, she’s “100% on Board.”
By Wednesday evening, protests had started at the White House on the matter.
A couple hundred people gathered in front of the White House to protest the Republican president’s action, waving rainbow flags and chanting: “No hate, no fear, trans students are welcome here.” The rainbow flag is the symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, or LGBT, people.
“We all know that Donald Trump is a bully, but his attack on transgender children today is a new low,” said Rachel Tiven, chief executive of Lambda Legal, which advocates for LGBT people. (Via Reuters)
While Sessions is painted as the bad guy, the fact is DeVos agreed to this. The Trump administration is united in its attacks on the marginalized. With the creation of crime task forces, a Muslim ban, and now the rolling back of protection guidelines for transgender youth, they can sit comfortably knowing that they are absolutely changing America.
History will be a far harsher judge.
